The EJB Quartet is a modern straight-ahead ensemble formed in 2015, having gained wider acclaim in 2020 by winning the DC Jazz Prix International Band Competition for their performance of "The Karma Suite". Formed by Saxophonist and Composer Elijah Jamal Balbed, the EJB Quartet focuses on "social music" - music to represent the times we are living through, bad and good. Rooted in the tradition of Black American Music with swing and blues at the root, the Quartet has a chemistry and freedom together that allows them to weave in and out of themes, giving the music an organic modernism which portrays their experiences as millennial "Jazz" musicians. The Karma Suite is a body of work written between 2015-2020 which reflects on an array of different experiences we went through collectively during that period of time. While the suite is about a somber topic, the music portrays a variety of emotions and gives the audience a musical release from all the tensions of the world.
